1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
Lydian Mint is making 1/4 oz silver rounds. They are also only a 1.09 over spot. What do you think of silver fractionals? Have you ever heard of this mint? Any input/info would be greatly appreciated.

I personally dont see the point of fractional silver rounds. If you are thinking get them for when TSHTF, thats what dimes are for

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
1.09 over spot per ounce if you buy four of them, or (more likely) 1.09 over the 1/4 of spot price? The latter would mean that per ounce you are paying 4.36 over spot.
Silver is so cheap, 1 ounce is small enough denomination if you ask me. |
Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
What's the point? There is little interest in sub-ounce sizes, and making a 1/4 ounce takes as much labor as any other size. I don't think you'll hear of these again.

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
I agree with the other posters. If you want to make change when TSHTF just use 90%. The US Govt has already minted enough fractionals for you to use.

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
Premium is too high and fractional silver rounds serve no functional purpose. As posted above, 90% in the U.S., 80% in Canada, and old national circulated silver coins in other countries serve as an excellent (as in can't be beat) form of fractional silver. The coins served in circulation at one time and can do so again if & when needed; unquestionable authenticity; government guarantee re silver content and its purity; exceedingly liquid; enjoys legal tender status and everything legal tender means re moving silver across borders, and the coins are very difficult to counterfiet.

What is the point in fractional silver?
My preference in Silver is the Ten Ounce Bar |

Do you have a link?

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
I have a set of the fractional prospectors mainly as a novelty. They are very detailed pretty coins.

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
Anything below 1/2 oz, doesn't make sense, except for collector value, IMO. As others have posted, that what 90% is for, at a lower premium. Actually, even 1/2 ouncers are questionable, except that they fill a hole between a 90% Ag dollar and a half.

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
I'd buy a dozen just for the conversational value.

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
I have JM 5 gram silver fracs. They sell for almost the same price as an oz on ebay.
if you are going to resell BUY THEM NOW. If not buy 3 as a novelty. As Ruprick mentioned, like to share a link? Also search GIM for the "Fractional Silver?" thread started by Saul Mine! |
Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
Fractionals have a huge premium attached to them. They were huge in the 80s when the spot price of silver hit record highs. Right now, with silver so cheap fractionals don't make a whole lot of sense. But if the price climbs skyward, you will see fractionals minted once again and those who had the foresight to invest in them now will make a killing.

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
Looks like if you want less than 100oz you have to go through momssilvershop.com. They tend to have a high premium on their products though.

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
That's a shame, I would be in for 5oz of them just to change it up a bit in my collection.
We could try a group order? Anyone else know if they are sold individually anywhere else? They are a bit silly but kind of interesting looking too. |

Also a 1/4 round at 1 over spot = 4 over spot per oz. |

Frankly I think the one quarter silver coins from the mint 6 for $30.00 -
are a fine deal. :Surrender: If you like PROOFS and silver. JMVHO :signs14: |
Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
personally I'd rather use 1/2 oz'ers than junk silver. I'd buy if the price was closer to spot.

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
I'm buying 1/2 rounds when i can find them locally.

Re: 1/4 oz Silver rounds...What do you think?
I bought some a couple months ago directly from Lydian Mint as I posted on another thread. I like them a lot. I have mixed results on resale.

a Washington Quarter ... 6.25 grams. x 90% ~ 5.4+ grams, 1/6 ounce. i guess if you mixed a dime and a quarter you'd have about a quarter ounce, do they'd be somewhere in size between the silver quarter & the half. Switzerland had these beautiful coins about the size of a half in the 1970's. i don't know what they were called, i was a young turista. they looked 80% silver. those would be nice for a quarter ounce bar. |
